Biofeedback is a training technique which involves monitoring certain life signs like for example EEG, heart rate, blood pressure and muscle activity as a guide. The method is intended to facilitate greater control over one's body. Since a person's physiological state is often related to one's state of mind, having immediate knowledge of certain indicators could provide insight to let somebody know a lot more about what their thought processes are.

There are two major biofeedback techniques with the most common consisting of empowerment training. It is used as a means to become much more self aware with better self control. There are several aspects of body functioning that we are unable to manipulate with conscious control, though the realm of functions that we can manipulate is broader than what nearly all people realize.

Among the more extraordinary findings regarding biofeedback was discovered by Dr. James S. Gordon, who was a Yale neuroscientist and psychologist. It was found that some aspects of the autonomic nervous system are adaptable to conscious control. He experimented with rats and was able to get them to change various nervous functions from brainwaves to heart rate by rewarding them selectively with direct stimulation to their pleasure centers.

There are a variety of issues that biofeedback has been scientifically proven useful. It can really help with concerns like for example incontinence, spinal cord and stroke rehabilitation, pain and stress management amongst others. Biofeedback tools could be found in the form of bathroom mirrors and scales, and may be more common than you might imagine. These apparatus are forms of biofeedback that convey to us information regarding our weight and our appearance. Thus, we all use biofeedback.

Individuals are hopeful that in the future, biofeedback will be helpful for treating drug addiction, headaches, depression, anxiety and different common problems. There are even some who like to use biofeedback devices so as to ascend to yogi-like control over their bodily functions.
